Decoding Children’s Drawings

Introduction

The development process of drawings in infants and children is similar all over the world and across cultures. The starting point for infants is very similar to the evolution process. It seems as if the doodling mechanism stems from similar genetic features shared by all children.

When the observer of the drawings accumulates extensive knowledge in understanding these processes, s/he learns to identify the vast information reflecting the child’s development: the child’s emotional state, intellectual development, physical state, health, and many other details that bypass the mechanism that is much more developed in adults- the super ego’s sift.

Rimerman (1993) noted that the child who is drawing, graphically expressing him/herself, is focused on the process of making the drawing- the use of materials, hand movements, and so forth, and is unaware to the final product of that activity. This process can assist the researcher to directly examine characteristics of the child’s personality.

Professionals in the field of children’s drawings analysis divide the development process of children’s drawings to different stages, which are used as a scale for comparing children’s development. These comparative tables were created after a close examination of hundreds of thousands of children’s drawings from all over the world and throughout decades, while comparatively analyzing similar ages.

The division to stages varies from one group of researchers to another, but the foundation is similar: the spontaneous scribble phase, the structured scribble phase, the pre-schematic phase, and the schematic phase.

After the phase in which the infant smashes the pencil or pastel on the page, recognizing the trails of his/her physical activity, the infant progresses to move the arms, creating movement routes. In the next phase, the infant progresses to create circular movements. After recognizing that s/he can make an identifiable circle, lines are added, and shapes that resemble unicellular organisms exposed under the microscope- amoeba, flagellum, alga. It further progresses to a spermatozoon, and later on, to a human figure.

תהליך התפתחות הציורים אצל ילדים / פעוטות, דומה בכל העולם ובכל התרבויות.

נקודת המוצא אצל כלל הזאטוטים בעולם, דומה מאד לתהליך התפתחות האבולוציה.

נראה כאילו כל מנגנון השרבוט נובע מנתונים גנטיים דומים אצל כלל הילדים.

כאשר המתבונן בציורים, צובר ידע מקיף בהבנת התהליכים, לומד הוא לזהות כי השרבוטים משקפים מידע רב אודות התפתחות הילד: מצבו הרגשי, התפתחותו השכלית, מצבו הפיסי, בריאותי ונתונים רבים שעוקפים את המנגנון שמפותח אצל מבוגרים- מסננת ה"סופר אגו", הרציונל. "הילד המצייר, המתבטא גרפית, טרוד בתהליך התהוותו של הציור, השימוש בחומרים גרפיים, תנועות היד ועוד, ואינו מודע לתוצר הסופי של אותה פעולה גרפית. בתהליך זה יש כדי לסייע לחוקר לבחון בצורה בלתי אמצעית וישירה אפיונים באישיותו של הילד. העוסקים בחקר ציורי ילדים מחלקים את התפתחות ציור הילדים לשלבים שונים, המשמשים כטבלת קנה- מידה להשוואה התפתחותית של הילד.

טבלאות יחסיות אלו, נוצרו לאחר בחינת מאות אלפי ציורים של ילדים, מכל רחבי העולם, במשך עשרות שנים, תוך בחינה השוואתית של גילאים זהים.

החלוקה שנוצרה משתנה מקבוצת חוקרים אחת לאחרת, אך הרעיון דומה:

שלב השרבוט הספונטני, שלב השרבוט המובנה, השלב הטרום סכמטי והשלב הסכמטי.

לאחר השלב, בו מטיח הזאטוט את העיפרון או צבע הפסטל, על דף הנייר ומזהה כי נוצרים עקבות לפעילותו הפיסית, עובר לשלב הנעת היד מצד לצד, תוך יצירת מסלולי תנועה.

בשלב הבא יוצר תנועות סיבוביות. לאחר שזיהה ביכולתו ליצור עיגול מזוהה, מתחיל להוסיף לו קווים ונוצרת צורות הדומות לחד- תאיים הנחשפים תחת מיקרוסקופ - "אמבה", "שוטון", "אצה". המשכה דמות "זרעון" ואחר דמות אדם.
